Hooks beat guidelines
Enforcing agent behavior with hooks instead of asking nicely.
The difference
A guideline asks Claude to behave. A hook runs your command at a set point, so the action always happens.
Use a hook when
- A step must never be skipped.
- An action must be blocked.
- A short reminder must reach Claude with every message.
Use a guideline when
The right choice depends on the situation, and a person or Claude must judge it.
