Does Claude say “done” when the work is wrong?
Six small coding tasks, 100 runs: did Claude say "done" while the code was wrong?
What did the test try to catch?
Long jobs have a known failure: Claude "declares victory on the entire project too early". We tried to produce it on small coding tasks instead. Every task had hidden checks that Claude never saw. A wrong "DONE" means Claude said DONE while a hidden check failed.
What happened?
Across 100 runs on Claude Haiku, there were 0 wrong "DONE" claims. We used six tasks: a function with six rules, one rounding bug copied into three files, 2026 U.S. holidays, a ticket with 13 rules, a test with a wrong expected value, and a CSV parser. With the wrong test in the folder, Claude wrote the true average, left the test alone and said STUCK in 20 of 20 runs. We ran each task and prompt 10 times, so these are 10-run samples. At 0 failures in 10 runs, the true rate could still be about 26 percent.
Did an extra check help?
The plain runs never failed, so an extra check had nothing to fix. Asking for evidence, or for a test per rule, changed no outcome. It raised the average cost per run by 1.6 to 1.8 times, from $0.0049 to $0.0080 and from $0.0069 to $0.0122.
What does an impossible check do?
One prompt forbade "DONE" unless every fact had been checked against a source Claude had opened. Claude could not open one. All 10 functions were correct. None was reported as done, because the prompt forbade it. An impossible check turns correct work into unfinished work.
What was the most useful finding?
Our first hidden check was wrong. It used 1048524 bytes, which rounds to 1023.9 KB, and Claude had it right. We would give a grader its own test: run it on a known-right and a known-wrong solution before trusting any score.
How do you test it on your own work?
- Write the hidden checks first. Run them on a correct solution and on the unfixed starting files.
- Give Claude the task in a fresh folder, 10 times, ending with DONE or STUCK.
- Count the runs that said DONE while a hidden check failed.
Pick a task hard enough to fail sometimes. These six did not.
Check
- Run the kit on one task of your own, with your own model, before relying on this result.
- This is a null result: the failure did not appear here, which does not show it never happens.
- We did not test long jobs, other models or interactive sessions.
