CLAUDE.md, skills and hooks: setting up a codebase for agents
The workflows, skills and hooks other teams can copy, from the talk to about 50 developers.
Three parts
- CLAUDE.md: a memory file Claude Code reads at the start of every session. It holds rules and pointers.
- Skills: packaged instructions Claude loads when a task needs them.
- Hooks: commands that run at set points, so certain actions always happen.
Keep CLAUDE.md short
Put the rules that always apply in it. Link to longer files for the rest, and say when to read each one.
Start here
- Write the three rules you repeat most.
- Turn one repeated task into a skill.
- Turn one rule that must never be skipped into a hook.
